On Saturday, February 6th, the folks at the Elite Warrior Challenge had the whole floor of the Salem Civic Center covered with both a full size boxing ring and their 30-foot circular cage side by side. It was reminiscent of the recent Bellator "Dynamite" show they co-promoted with Glory Kickboxing. The arena itself is pretty fascinating, while it's an older building, the layout is super conducive for viewing combat sports. The seats on both sides of the arena are deceptively intimate regardless of how far from the cage you actually are. Just in case, the promotion also put up two big projection screens to ensure there's not a bad seat in the house...

The Salem Civic Center will once again be the home for Southwestern VA's growing promotion Elite Warrior Challenge, Saturday, February 6th. This event was supposed to take place two weeks ago, but due to the historic snow storm that covered most of the state, they were forced to postpone the event. Although the rescheduling affected some of the original lineup, EWC 9 still has a line up of 9 Pro MMA fights with some Pro Boxing and Pro Muay Thai bouts in the under card as well...

It’s funny how a couple of months can change your perspective. In April, I started writing a piece on the sad state of Pro MMA in our state. I was going to write on what were the barriers to entry for organizations to come in and put on Pro shows in a state that doesn’t really care much for sports outside of college athletics, NASCAR, and the love/hate of the closest Pro Football team we have, the Washington Redskins. I was going to highlight a lot of the issues that, for the last couple of years, have prevented a steady flow of Pro shows from developing.
