EWC Matchmaker, Jeremy Boardwine, was nervous this week. After all, it is fight week for EWC 15, which will be held Saturday night, March 10th at the Roanoke Moose Family Center #284. As any matchmaker can tell you, fight week is when the toughest of the tough sometimes get “injured” or have an “illness” and become unable to compete in their scheduled bout. This can wreak havoc on a fight card. Thankfully, for EWC’s first all-MMA card of 2018, all the fights have held up during the week and Boardwine couldn’t be more pleased. All but one fighter showed up for weigh-ins on Friday. The one that didn’t will weigh in on Saturday. So, all up and all in, fans in the Roanoke Valley will be treated to 9 bouts on this Pro/Am card.
Topping the card, in the featured bout, will be two former EWC amateur champions that have returned to compete in the familiar confines of the 30’ Monster Cage, where they have found success and captured gold. Chris “The Rocket” Rollins vs. James Ronsick will be held in the EWC Featherweight division. EWC 15 will be the fourth venture into the EWC Monster Cage, for Rollins, and he’ll be matched against Ronsick, who will become an eight-time veteran. Ronsick is coming off a Fight of the Night performance at Warfare MMA 17, in a losing effort, in December and holds a 1-4 pro record, with his lone pro win coming in his debut at EWC 8. Rollins, coming off a paper-thin decision loss to Thomas Blair, in December, sports a 3-6-1 record and promises to let the fans and the members of Rocket Nation see a glimpse of the Rocket of old, that took him to multiple promotion titles during his amateur career.
Other featured fights and fighters on the card will be Dreon Martin (0-3), who will be dropping down to Featherweight, where he hasn’t competed since his amateur days. He’ll be taking on Kevin Schroder (0-1) out of North Carolina.
“Slick” Rick Caruso (0-3) will shed the boxing gloves and make his return to MMA, after a 4-year absence, from the sport, to take on Marcus Levester (0-3).
Chad Wiggington (1-1) will be making his return, after an almost two and a half year layoff to take on former EWC amateur Lightweight champion, Paris Artis (0-0), who will be making his pro debut. Wiggington lost a close decision to Tony Gravely his last time out and Artis is coming off a knockout victory at EWC 13, where he captured EWC gold.
On the amateur undercard, the EWC Flyweight belt will be on the line between Josh Oxendine (1-4-1) and Jacob Cosgro (2-0). The Lightweight belt will be contested between Justin Starks (2-1) and Gordon Emery (0-0). Starks, a teammate of former champion, Paris Artis, will look to keep the vacated belt within the team and Chris Rollins’ head coach Emery, will look to capture gold in his MMA debut.
