by Ryan MacDonald

MMA in VA reports from The Meadow Events Center in Doswell, VA, Saturday, April 23rd at approximately 6:30 PM EST with play by play and our "of the Night" Awards for Sprawl N Brawl 6.

Michael Bulich v. Davonte Buchanan

Round 1

RVA MMA's Bulich looks to start his MMA career out on a good note, in his first fight.  Independent, Davonte Buchanan, is providing the opposition.  Buchanan lost in his last outing in the Sprawl N Brawl cage.  This bout is in the S n B Lightweight division.  Bulich's intent was to get his opponent to the mat.  He ate a Buchanan left on the way in, but was successful in a slamming takedown.  Buchanan took some punishment, but made his way back to his feet, only to be taken down a short time later.  Bulich took his back, flattened him out and grounded and pounded Buchanan until the referee stepped in and called it a night at the 1:59 mark.  Bulich is now 1-0 in his young MMA career, via TKO.

Trey Stevens v. Jason Huddleston

Round 1

MMA Institute's Huddleston  taking on Independent, Trey Stevens in a 150 pound catchweight bout.  Huddleston pushed the pace early, working his jabs and almost finding a home for some strong left hooks.  Stevens, switching stances wasn't able to find a home for any of his big overhand rights, either.  Not a dominant round by either fighter, but more volume and more cage control went to Huddleston.

MMA in VA Scorecard:  10-9 Huddleston

Round 2

Huddleston had zero intention of seeing a 3rd round and swarmed Stevens from the opening bell, forcing a stoppage at 31 seconds of the round.  The winner by TKO, due to referee stoppage is Jason Huddleston.

David Simpson v. Justin Lewis

Round 1

This description will have more words in it than the fight had seconds.  Lewis shot in on RVA MMA's Simpson, but left his neck open for a guillotine by Simpson.  The fight hit the ground with a thud and Lewis tapped quickly, due to the guillotine choke.  David Simpson is the winner, by submission, at 19 seconds of the round.

Catherine Jansen v. Chelsea McCoy

Round 1

Left Hook Entertainment's Flyweight Champion moves up a weight class, to Bantamweight, to welcome newcomer Catherine Jansen to the cage.  Jansen is at a 4-fight experience disadvantage, but took a fight that many fighters would not accept.  "CJ Guns showed zero intimidation and took the fight right to Chelsea.  Both fighters exchanged, but the tight space allowed Chelsea to change levels and take Jansen to the mat.  Jansen expended a lot of energy trying to hold on to a guillotine choke that she didn't have.  McCoy withstood the punishment, took Jansen's back, rolled her over with hooks in and sunk in a fight ending rear-naked choke at 1:56 of the first.  Winner by rear-naked choke submission and moving to 4-1 is McCoy.

Chevelle Womack v. Ryan Balintfy

Round 1

Chevelle Womack, unsuccessful in his MMA debut three weeks ago faces Pride Training Center's Ryan "The Hammer" Balintfy.  Both fighters lost their last bout via decision, Balinty a Unanimous Decision loss to now Pro, Hawraz Syan and Womack, via Split Decision to Zach Filer.  Neither fighter will want to let this bout get to the judges.  Balinty almost sprinted across the cage to engage, clinched up and hit Womack with several uppercuts.  Womack pushed Balintfy against the cage and scored a takedown.  Balinty worked back to his feet and took Womack down.  Womack worked out, after being controlled and taking some nice ground and pound from Balintfy.  Womack reversed position to end the round and ended up on top.  This was an extremely close round.  Two takedowns from Womack against more dominant top time and punishment landed by Balintfy.

MMA in VA Scorecard:  10-9 Balintfy

Round 2

Balintfy worked for a quick takedown and was successful.  Womack briefly worked back to his feet but saw the mat almost immediately.  Two takedowns and a full round of control by Balintfy, should be enough to cement that round for the Pride Training Center fighter.

MMA in VA Scorecard:  10-9 Balintfy

Round 3

Both fighters imitated round one and went in exchanging uppercuts.  Balintfy got the takedown but was immediately reversed by Womack.  Womack couldn't capitalize and Balintfy used an arm bar attempt to eventually roll out and reverse position on Womack, taking his back.  Balintfy ended the round almost locking in a fight finishing arm bar, but the bout ended.  The judges scored the fight, unanimously, for Balinty 30-27, 30-25, 30-27.

MMA in VA Scorecard:  10-9 Balintfy

Sarah Wholley v. Jasmyn Arnold

Round 1

Quite a weight discrepancy in this Featherweight bout as Arnold weighed in at 151.6 pounds and Wholley weighed in at 137.  Arnold looked for the early clinch and takedown, but Wholley withstood it and ended up using Arnold's momentum to roll into top position.  The fight got back to it's feet, Arnold went for another takedown and got rolled over again.  Arnold was unsuccessful with an arm bar from the bottom, but later mounted Wholley and layed down ground and pound until Shaun Spath stepped in to waive off the fight.  Your winner at 2:26 of the round is Jasmyn Arnold, via TKO.

Angelica Martinez v. Lindsey MacMhaolain

Round 1

The sole title bout of the night is for the Left Hook Entertainment Strawweight title.  MacMhaolain has the experience advantage, hailing from Revolution BJJ, but is taking on RVA MMA's Angelica Martinez who is on a two fight winning streak.  Martinez has the crowd advantage in her corner.  MacMhaolain, with an extreme height disadvantage did a good job closing the distance and getting inside Martinez's range.  Both fighters exchanged repeatedly and exchanged positions against the cage.  Martinez opened up a cut to the middle of the forehead of MacMhaolain.  Very competitive round.

MMA in VA's Scorecard:  10-9 Martinez

Round 2

MacMhaolain came out the fresher of the two fighters and pushed for a takedown.  The longer, lankier Martinez  kept her in full guard, but MacMhaolin kept pushing forward until she was reversed by Martinez.  The time on the bottom allowed Martinez to recover and attempt some ground and pound, but MacMhaolain tied her up with an arm bar.  Both fighters were tangled for some time, elbowing thighs and throwing hammer fists.  Another very close round.

MMA in VA Scorecard:  10-9 Martinez

Round 3

MacMhaolain answered the bell for the third round showing extensive damage.  The cut from round one maintained and both eyes had minor swelling.  Martinez not coming out unscathed, as she was showing some wear from the MacMhaolain strikes through two.  Both fighters clinched and most strikes were of the dirty boxing variety.  When the fighters did break free, Martinez was so much more active and damaging with her strikes.  What a war!  The judges saw the bout for Martinez, via unanimous decision.  The 18-year old Martinez captured the LHE Strawweight title.
